This is the 10th and final article. Taking this honorable opportunity, I would like to pick up an LP which my Master introduced at No.1 Article in this blog. This is the LP which my Master bought when he was 14 years old, though he lost the original LP during “CD age”. He bought the same LP on the picture when “Record boom” came to him 10 years ago. The Pink Obi and picture of Peter Damm playing silver Mönnig B♭single horn is a good contrast. The Obi says “Long awaited latest recoding which “Taiki”( means Big Vessel = person with great ability) of Dresden Staatzkapelle finally released”
By the way, the Obi might be a reason why my Master was about to name his first baby “Taiki”.The words “Taiki” might have remained unconsciously in my Master’s memory.
Music
Mozart’s 4 horn concert and Rondo KV371 are recorded in this LP. It is still unclear when Mozart wrote each concert and some parts of original score are missing. Some says somebody else modified after death of Mozart. Peter Damm introduces his study about Mozart concert and we can read it on back side of LP jacket. After he investigated original scores and huge number of historical documents, he corrected some part of score and plays it in this LP.
Study on Mozart’s work is still ongoing. I could say Horn Concert is still under discovery by new findings.
Players and Recording
Conductor: Herbert Blomstedt
Orchestra:Staatskapelle Dresden
Recording Engineer:Horst Kunze
Date :March 28-31, 1974 (Peter Damm 36 years old )
Venue:Lukas Kirche, Dresden
Again, this is a product by Blomstadt and Peter Damm like No.8 Article.
Please see below picture. Difference of font size for our Peter Damm and Herbert Blomstedt might indicate power balance between the 2 artists at that time. I guess it might be a tough work for Blomstedt to conduct “Peter Damm” version of Mozart for the first time.
My favorite
It is impossible to select my favorite piece from this LP, because entire LP is my favorite. Horn is amazing but I also learned accompanying orchestra is also wonderful, compared to other Horn concert I have ever listened. Staatzkapelle, colleagues of Peter Damm, is doing amazing job ! Still difficult to select one, but I introduce only 2 music from this LP today.
Rondo KV371
It is said that missing part of this work was found recently and it became a news among horn players. Of course, Peter Damm did not have the information in 1974. He carefully examined available scores and information, and then reorganized the Rondo with his beautiful Cadenza. The beautiful Cadenza makes me imagine Peter Damm’s solo practice in silent church. Amazing performance !
KV495 Romanze
This beautiful movement remind us of beautiful Aria or 2nd movement of clarinet concert written by Mozart. The middle part of this movement start with minor tone convinces me that Peter Damm is a excellent singer rather than horn player.
